O.J. Simpson's book deal?

Early this morning, I sent the following e-mail to Ron Hogan:

I can't believe The Book Standard reported this yesterday without asking any publishing insiders to confirm it. (That part about National Enquirer's "secret source" had me rolling my eyes so hard I nearly injured myself.) I won't believe O.J. Simpson snagged a $3.5 million book deal to "almost confess" to murdering his wife and her friend until I read about it at Galleycat.

So, are you guys looking into this?

A few minutes ago, Ron wrote back: "Only if by 'looking into this,' you mean 'inviting anybody who knows anything to email us.' *grin*" He called the story "pretty apalling" and said they were putting up a poll at Galleycat. I'll be watching for updates.

UPDATE, November 9, 2006:

Google is linking to this post from Page One of its search results for "O.J. Simpson" and "book." They've been sending me 10-20 visitors a day, so I'm guessing a lot of people haven't yet heard how all this turned out:

The story about O.J. Simpson's $3.5 million book deal is not true.

UPDATE, November 15, 2006:

I hardly ever watch TV, but I happened to have it on last night to catch House, so I was one of the first to see the horrid ad for the upcoming show in which O.J. Simpson will talk about how he would have murdered his ex-wife and her friend if he'd been the perpetrator.

This from this morning's Galleycat:

Apparently the trick to keeping the deal secret is to have your author's attorney lie through his teeth. Wonder if Yale Galanter is going to live up to the vow he made to reporters last month: "If anyone comes out with such a book, I'll go on every talk show and call it crap."

Frankly, the idea of Simpson's milking this tragedy to gain attention and money makes me sick. I won't be watching the show or reading the book. I'm just posting this update because Google is still sending people here--over 75 have stopped by just this morning--and I felt obligated to report the latest.

Thanks for visiting my blog. Click here if you'd like to see the most recent entry.

Barbara Walters stated on The View today that she has read the book but she had to sign a confidentiality agreement to not disclose anything she read.

So the book is real.

I won't be buying it. However it will probably end up being a best seller because blood and gore sells and people want to know what happened. Too bad that the money hasn't been garnished and earmarked for the victims' families to pay off the civil judgment they were awarded.

I saw this when I logged into my yahoo email this a.m. and I felt sick to my stomach, literally ill. What is this world coming to?

The family of Ron Goldman has sued OJ for damages and has a pending settlement with him. I hope the family gets the money from this book deal and not OJ.

Google's still directing lots of searchers to this post, and tonight the crazies appear to be out in force. I've just deleted some disgusting and profane comments, and to prevent any more from slipping through when I'm not watching, the Comment feature will be disabled for this post.
