John Grisham: A class act

Here's an inspiring tidbit from Canada.com's Entertainment page:

Bestselling writer John Grisham and his wife will contribute $5 million US to a relief fund they established this week at a Tupelo bank to help Mississippians rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.

"We don't normally publicize gifts. It's something we keep extremely private," Grisham said Friday during a conference call with the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal and officials with BancorpSouth.

"But in these very, very rare circumstances -- this tragic time -- we hope the gift will get some attention and inspire other people to contribute money and help our fellow Mississippians on the Gulf Coast," said Grisham, who maintains a home in Oxford, Miss.

Grisham has always struck me as an attractively modest individual, and this news makes me want to stand up and cheer. He's right--while under normal circumstances it isn't appropriate to brag about our charitable work, there are times when talking about our own contributions can encourage others to take similar action.

There is always that conflict between not letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing versus the setting the right example as a witness. I guess it comes from knowing what is in the heart, what are our motivations?

I think you've nailed it, Marvin.

You go, John!

I've read most of his books. I know he's not looked at as a high-faluting writer. I think The Testament, about the missionary, was a rather touching story.

I've always had a warm regard for the guy, and it's even warmer now.

Plus, he's a hottie. :D
