The best novels for geeks

Posted this morning in The Guardian's Technology Blog:

So far, 132 people have voted for the best geek novels (written in English since 1932).... The top 20 is therefore as follows, with the numbers in brackets showing the number of votes.
Oh, my. I'm afraid I've read numbers 1 (several times), 2, 3, 6, 8, and 15. That's six books out of the twenty. Guess I'm a lot geekier than I thought.

How about you?

I've read numbers 6, 7, 8, and 15 . But I've read short stories by Philip K. Dick and I've read other books by Terry Pratchet. (as well as many books and stories by Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke -- surprised he wasn't on the list -- Robert Heinlein and a bunch of others.) So I'm probably geekier than I realized.

Finally something to feel good about: I've only read one of the books on the list, Frank Herbert's Dune, which implies a low geek factor. (As long as you don't find out that I read all the other books in the series, too. Oops -- did I say that out loud?)

Boom.

Ladies and gentleman, I regret to inform you that Professor Bertrand has just fallen off his pedestal. Although the gentleman is physically uninjured (apart from those bruises on his backside), his reputation has suffered irreparable damage since his disclosure that he is in fact a member of the illiterati; yes, he is a reader of [gasp] genre fiction.

Now that his reputation is shattered, will the Professor (we probably should go ahead and start calling him just plain old "Mark") sink even lower and endeavor to pen a romance novel? Stay tuned.

Linda, I haven't read Heinlein in years, but my favorite was always The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

I am obviously a supergeek in the making. I've read all the top four, and 9 altogether from the list (read in toto);plus I have read parts of 3 more on the list; plus I own some of the ones I didn't read (TBR piles, somewhere round here). I own several other of the books on the list, but haven't read them yet.

Do I get points for having read two others by Wyndham, though not Trouble With Lichen. (ie, read TRIFFIDS and MIDWICH CUCKOOS) or for having read DO ANDROIDS ETC years before the film BLADERUNNER came out? Or for having read not only I, ROBOT, but for having the Ellison script (unproduced) of I, ROBOT. :)

I can't believe they left out Bester, though. Cool novels, even today, still cool. Or MORE THAN HUMAN...one of my other all time fave SF novels.

NOTE: I have one of the two novels by Brunner he mentions(STAND ON ZANZIBAR) from, oooh, way back when, still unread. Bought it cause the cover rocked and the novel was "buzzed". Overpopulation is just not a big thang with The Mir (who has a never-tenanted womb). Urp. TMI. I have at least heard of Shockwave Rider. :D Gimme my bonus points!

AND..just today, my ebay win of a 1988 screenplay of WATCHMEN arrived. Woohoo. (One of the listed reads I read was WATCHMEN, the full comic series by Alan Moore--what a brooder that man is!)I'm extra Watchmen geeky.

As far as DUNE, it's one of my top five all time reads. Have read it at least a dozen times. Used to love to recite the Litany of Fear. Own the crappy Lynch version, own the terrific Sci-Fi channel DVD's of both Dune and Children of Dune. I wanted to marry Paul Atreides as a teenager. I wanted to be Chani. :)

I am proud of my geekiness. ::::bowing::::: It's time to go an read my next installment of the SANDMAN series I bought to read from start to finish. Lovely. Oh, lovely darknesses. If I were 16, I'd have me a major crush on Morpheus/Oneiros/Dream/Sandman. As it is, I'm a semi-crushing 45 year-old.

JM has only risen in my estimation by enjoying DUNE. And my estimation was pretty high to start with. Plus, JM has one of the best "intense intellectual expressions" type blog pics I've seen on the net. :D

I think I just set the official seal on my "geekness" by posting on my blog on comic books. :)

I'm geekier than you, Brenda. I've read seven of them.

1,2,7,8,9,& 15 - and I may well have read 3 as a teenager, but I can't be sure.

Three of those authors - Pratchett, Adams and Asimov - would be favourites of mine.

Wish I were geekier! I only read ONE lone book on the list...and I was assigned to read it in high school (but I liked it).

I have tried several times at my local library to get a few others listed, but to no avail. Guess it doesn't help that I live in the middle of nowhere.

Guess I'll have to break down and buy some of these. I am a "Star Trek" geek and love sci-fi stuff--why haven't I read more of these books???

(who would think I would be disappointed NOT to be declared a geek?)

Mine were 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 19. Dune is my all time fav. I love the dictionary in the back that explains all the new words they made up. I also have all the versions of all the movies they made of it! Yikes....I'm a geek!

hmm... I haven't read any of them. (LOL I really need to stop answering these questions, you're going to think I'm greatly uneducated... LOL If you already do, I don't need to know it.)

Oh good grief. I've read the first 8. Of the remaining 12, I've read 5 of them. I honestly don't know whether to hold my head up high or crawl into a small hole and hide ...
