Famous first words

Debra Hamel has come up with a fun idea: TwitterLit.com. This from her page:

What is TwitterLit? Twice a day, at about 12:00 AM and 12:00PM GMT, I post the first line of a book, without the author's name or book title, but with a link (to Amazon.com) so you can see what book the line is from. Why? Because it's fun! A quick literary teaser for you twice daily. The posts are also available for subscription via RSS and Twitter.

I'm always interested in collections of first lines, so I've snagged the RSS feed and will probably glance at the site every few days. All the best, Debra!

Here's my absolute favorite first line from a book. "I'm obsessed with breasts."

I burst out laughing when I read that line. It goes on to say, "Not in the lesbian sense. I'm a card-carrying heterosexual with a serious crush on Johnny Depp."

How can you not want to read a book like that? I was hooked after those opening lines. It's from Laura Jensen Walker's book, "Reconstructing Natalie," a wonderful, touching story about the difficulties of dealing with breast cancer. Laura writes from her first-hand knowledge and the book is poignant, moving and REAL!

I'll have to check out this site. Thanks, Brenda!
