On the sad lack of lilacs

At this time of year, I usually place voluptuous bouquets of lilacs in several rooms of my house--and then sometimes open windows so the heady fragrance doesn't overpower. But earlier this month, a killing frost broke my tradition by freezing almost all of the lilac buds. And that was followed just days later by a devastating hailstorm

Yesterday I collected this straggly handful of blooms and tucked them into an old Beleek lily-of-the-valley vase on my desk. At least I can still enjoy the scent of lilacs as I work.

It's been a sad spring, with the death in the garden mirroring the killing at Virginia tech. I felt my plants were in mourning.

But my daffodils came out, and brought hope.

Thanks for sharing your photo of the lilac bouquet! It seems alittle sad, but hopeful.
I loved my lilacs, but when the sewer came through here they destroyed my huge old bush. I miss them. I loved taking armfuls to my neighborhood friends and my mother. No one seems to hate lilacs.
Today I saw a shy violet smiling at me and a tulip blooming in front of the garage!

I love lilacs and had a similar problem this year. What was left, I brought in the house and enjoyed what I had, hoping next year to have a bigger bunch.

We moved into an unfinished home last summer, and I spent a great deal of time directing traffic- moving vans and trailers full of lumber- around a poor little lilac bush. But I can't say if it will bloom this year (all 18" of it), as the leaves haven't come out on it yet. Spring comes to the north in her own time...

Last night I couldn't sleep and went for a walk past 3. Along the way I suddenly smelled lilacs and came upon a wall of them along the street. Even by streetlamp light they were colorful. I took extra time to enjoy them. With Collapsed Colony Disorder ravaging bee populations across the country I wondered what that wall of lilac bushes would look like next year. Perhaps like yours? I don't like bees very much, but I wouldn't wish them ill. We need them, after all.

My sister saw the photo on this post and said, "That's pathetic." Here is what my lilacs usually look like.

Douglas, I've been worrying about the bees, too.
