Food fit for a Blue Man

From time to time I look in on the a silly foodie blog called The Amateur Gourmet. I've just learned that Adam's running a Blue Food Contest, the winner of which will receive two tickets to see Blue Man Group in New York City.

No, I won't be submitting a recipe for blue food, but the contest reminded me of a trick I used to play on my kids on those cold, dark winter mornings when they woke up grumpy and didn't want to go to school. If you have kids or grandkids (or a spouse with a sense of humor), the next time somebody wants a glass of milk, try this: Sneak two or three drops of blue food color into the empty glass, then set the glass on the table in front of the victim. Move quickly, so he or she doesn't have time to notice anything unusual, and pour the milk.

The joke had quite a long life at our house. We made all kinds of blue food, and when my Number Two Son learned how to make pancakes from scratch... Well, let's just say that Blue Banana Pancakes were a family favorite for a couple of years.

LOL! I have boys - they'll love this! I'm going to give this a try.

When my first son - a very picky eater - refused to even touch his supper, I told him it was monkey brains and worms. Amazing how that works! :-)

Growing up, my mom worked, so my older siblings did a lot of the cooking. I had pink mashed potatoes, blue corn... they tried red food coloring in the burgers once, but then couldn't tell when they were done!

It's a lot of fun for kids. I'd forgotten that until you reminded me.
