Malfunctioning funny-meter?

Regular readers of "No rules" know I often pick up weird and wonderful links over at MSNBC's Clicked. ("My name is Will. This is what I clicked.") Just now when I made my daily stop over there, I was surprised and delighted to find that Will has printed a note I sent him about something he blogged about last week: a theology joke that he admitted he didn't get, and one which I didn't think was wildly funny.

What do you all think? Is it a good joke? Does my funny-meter need recalibrating?

And to all of you Clicked fans, thanks for clicking over here to my blog. Could I interest any of you in an inspirational romance novel today?

It's not very funny, to me. I thought Collen Dewhurst telling off Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice was a lot funnier. Ha. That still makes me laugh.

It's cute-smirk funny, not big hah out loud funny.

I've heard it before, but without the theologians. Probably "A priest, a minister, and a rabbi..."

Auuhhh...I've heard that one before, but with less invloved names...Ahhh..smirk funny but not coffee shooting out the nose funny. If this was a day that I was looking for jokes to post, I'd have passed!

You don't need a tune-up!

I came out "Karl Barth" on a "Which Theologian Are You" quiz, so the joke is hi-larious. Mileage may vary for fans of lesser theologians.

Hmm. Well, I did think about smirking when I read the joke, but I'm afraid I didn't follow through on that.

You said it, Gina. I was talking with a friend just the other day about how often sarcasm is used in the Bible to get a point across. Even Jesus used it. I was laughing with my friend about the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal (I Kings 18:1-29). Verse 27 is hilarious: "Shout louder!" Elijah jeers at the priests who are trying in vain to summon their own god. "Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is asleep and must be awakened." (That's from the NIV.)

Thanks for your kind words about my writing, Gina. I am definitely looking forward to seeing you gush. ;-)

Brenda, you do know what "busy" means in Hebrew, don't you? For those who don't, it means going to the bathroom... the same as "covering his feet". What a HOOT!
