If I only had a brain

Back in our growing-up days, whenever I did something dumb my brother would give me a pitying look and say, "If you had a brain you'd be dangerous." I like to think that I did finally grow a brain, but sometimes I wonder.

Last night I was scribbling a To Do list for this morning when my sister phoned and I put down my pen. Now I'm looking at the third item on my list, "blog about alpha" and my brain is not making any connections. Alpha what? Alpha who? I'm pretty sure I didn't mean the "alpha heroes" we see in so many romance novels.

Just now I tried to work the problem by analyzing these notes from the top. "resched. dentist" means something to me, and so does, "design program for spring rally." But whatever fabulous blog entry I had in mind for today is now lost in the murky recesses of my mind. At least I know what "not Monday" means, and I won't forget that I promised a book to Cindy. Even the grapes make sense: I must have doodled them when my sister and I discussed our upcoming trip (with our husbands) to the California wine country.

But "blog about alpha"? Your guess is as good as mine.

Alpha, the Christian program about discovering the meaning of life. It's a dinner thing normally, and it started in the prison systems in England?

Brain spasms! Don't you just love them? They release us from so many obligations.

Nienke! You guessed it! I was thinking about the brain and creativity and alpha waves!

But after all this straining to remember, I no longer have the energy to write the post. Maybe some other day. ;-)

Nice try, Bryan. (Prisons? A dinner thing? Never mind; I'm not sure I want to know.)

LOL Glad you remembered. I immediately thought "Alphasmart" since I'm still in the excited-phase of owning one.

In the current issue of Newsweek, they have an article on "Alpha Bloggers". Meet the highly evolved community of 'A-listers' with growing influence over the tech agenda. They show how radically power can shift in the age of the Internet. That would make a good entry!

OOOOPS! That was the Dec. 20th issue. (I stumbled across it on MSNBC.com)

I know you don't need to know, but I'll harness the incredible power of the internet to bore you senseless anyway.
The Alpha course was started by a man called Nicky Gumbel, who I think is from the Church of England - a couple of the churches in town have run it, and I imagine they do run in prisons, but I don't know that it originated for that purpose.
It's a course in Basic Christianity. When I did it there was a mix of people attending - from the curious to devout churchgoers. Each night the group saw a video of Nicky Gumbel talking to people in the church where he runs the course, had a break for coffee & traybakes, then spilt into smaller groups to discuss issues arising from the talk.
There was a dinner involved - presbyterians in Ireland are congenitally incapable of arranging any event without serious overkill on the food front - but I can't remember if it was on the first night or the last. Possibly both.

Nah, Lori, I don't want to write about alpha bloggers. They get enough attention already. (Not that I'm jealous. Much.)

Marianne, thanks for the information. I thought Bryan was pulling my leg. I hope he'll allow me to make amends by believing everything he tells me from now on. ;-)

Yes, those alpha courses are now being given at a lot of churches in our area. THey're sort of for seekers, I think. I just finished an autobiography of Michael Green, the British canon/minister, and he describes the start of them. I think he's a friend of Gumbel.

P.S. I see that rose on your to-do list, and I continue to be impressed with the way you work sensual beauty into your everyday surroundings. It may cost a little extra initially, but you probably pay out less in therapy.

Ha! No doubt you're right.

I guess it shows that I read a lot of Alexandra Stoddard books as a young woman.

Seriously. I'm sure I still have three or four of them around here somewhere....

Darn.

And here I was hoping it was me!

But I'm not that cool. However I am very smart...arseish. Does that count for the brain wave part?

I think smart people are uber cool. (Yes, I am aware that my "uber" is missing an umlat. I just didn't have one lying around anywhere.)
