Oops. I think I just memed again.

I thought better of my pal Booksquare. I thought she was too busy thinking Deep Thoughts to stoop to participation in a meme. And I thought this would be a great opportunity to show my superiority (okay, just pretend for a minute) by sniffing importantly and explaining that I don't do memes.

Then I remembered that I did this one. Well, okay. If Terry Teachout does memes, they must be all right.

You’re stuck inside Fahrenheit 451. Which book do you want to be?

One of the shorter ones. I'm not very good at memorization.

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?

Um, no. I'm pretty sure Terry Teachout is a real person.

The last book you bought was…?

A romance novel that I wasn't able to finish. I won't name names, but somebody (along with her agent, her editor, her publisher--and yes, even her mother and her cat) ought to be ashamed.

The last book you read was…?

Ian Sansom's The Impartial Recorder. I'm not sure whether I liked it or not. Anybody want to give me a clue?

What are you currently reading?

I'm rereading The Portrait of a Lady. It was Henry James's birthday last week, so I pulled the book off my dusty shelf, just meaning to enjoy that great opener once again, and I fell headlong...again.

Five books you would take to a desert island…

Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time. I've read it several times but was never quite able to concentrate enough to really "get" every bit of it. I need more time with Time.

Walden. Because it is the one book that has defeated me, and some day I plan to go another round with it and win. It's the only book I want to have read but can't bring myself to read. But I'm thinking maybe it isn't just me. Is that the single most boring book ever written, or what?

All of Shakespeare in one big, fat book. If that's too heavy for my suitcase, I'd be willing to tear out some of the histories and tragedies. The comedies and sonnets would be indispensible.

As much P. G. Wodehouse as can be crammed into one book.

And the Bible, natch.

Who are you passing this stick on to and why?

Oh, good; it's over. Let's dump this on

Chris Mikesell. Because I'm testing my theory that der Fieldenmarshal will post anything.

David Long, Bethany House editor and Fearless Leader of Faith in Fiction. Because I think he's been working too hard lately and needs to goof off a little.

My Number One Son. Because Mommy said so.

Brenda, for my high school graduation, I received a big fat book entitled The Complete Works of Shakespeare. Bound in beautiful green leather, with gilt pages, I loved it. Until it was destroyed in a flood. Just make sure those island getaway books have waterproof covers!

Oh! I wonder if it was the same romance I couldn't finish???

Okay, I'll see what I can do.

Tristan, stop misleading these nice people. You know you're my favorite only 50% of the time. And I'm sorry, but it's your brother's turn again because last night he brought me a cinnamon roll. Beat that.

Hi, Blue Thing. A meme (say: "meem") is an idea or a behavior that spreads among a group of people. On the internet, memes gain momentum when a blogger posts a quiz or a game and encourages other bloggers to pick it up and pass it around. Mostly, they're annoying. ;-)
